(3.10B) Inherited Traits and Learned Behaviors
Overview
The student is expected to explore that some characteristics of organisms are inherited such as the number of limbs on an animal or flower color and recognize that some behaviors are learned in response to living in a certain environment such as animals using tools to get food.
-
What is a Trait?
As part of the discussion about inherited characteristics, you may want to introduce the concept of genetic traits to students. This section contains teaching resources about traits.
-
Parents and Offspring
Use the resources in this section if you need to review concepts related to the resemblances between parents and offspring. This information, which usually is introduced prior to third grade, provides students with a basis for understanding inherited traits.
-
Learned and Instinctive Behaviors
Animal behaviors contribute to their survival. In this section’s signature lesson, students observe aquarium fish to distinguish between inherited (instinctive) behaviors and learned behaviors. They also learn about behaviors of other pets.
