Grade 4
Overview
Fourth grade students use the information they have collected to make informed decisions. They have many opportunities to use tools such as calculators, microscopes, triple beam balances and compasses to observe and measure. Students will enjoy examining the properties of soils, recording changes in weather, and learning about food webs.

Skills and Tools
Scientists use a variety of tools to extend their senses and collect information. Visit each section below to find lessons that develop students skills and abilities to use scientific tools safely and appropriately.

Physical Science
Fourth grade students use investigations to learn about the natural world. While studying physical science, students learn about matter, and how to compare, contrast and measure changes in physical materials. They also explore force and motion, and investigate different forms of energy.

Earth/Space
Students learn about the Earth’s surface and its renewable and nonrenewable resources. They also explore the relationship between the Moon and the Earth, and the role the Sun plays is the water cycle.

Life Science
Fourth graders look at energy flow throw environments beginning with the sun. They also look at adaptations and likenesses between parents and offspring, as well as life cycles of plants and insects.
