Physical Science
Overview
In grade three, students investigate the physical properties of different materials and learn that changes occur in those materials. They explore mixtures and investigate examples of light, sound, and heat/thermal energy in everyday life. Students manipulate objects by pushing and pulling to demonstrate changes in motion and position.
Students also learn that the study of science requires appropriate tools and safe practices when planning and implementing investigations, and that it involves asking and answering questions, collecting data by observing and measuring, and using models to support scientific inquiry about the natural world.

(3.5) Matter and Energy
Students explore physical materials and make observations about temperature, mass, magnetism, the abilities of objects to sink or float. They also develop the abilities to classify materials as solids, liquids or gases; to predict changes in materials caused by heating or cooling; and to create mixtures.

(3.6) Force, Motion and Energy
Energy is an important theme in elementary school. Third grade students learn that energy exists in many forms, such as mechanical, light, sound and thermal energy, and that these forms can be observed in everyday life. Students explore changes in motion and position by pushing and pulling objects, such as swings, balls and wagons. Third grade students also learn how magnets and gravity act on objects.
