(4.5) Matter and Energy
Overview
Students have numerous opportunities to measure, compare and contrast the physical characteristics of different materials, including size, mass, volume, states (solid, liquid, gas), temperature, magnetism, the ability to sink or float, and changes caused by heating and cooling. Students also create and examine a variety of mixtures and solutions. The use of different tools to collect, record and analyze information is emphasized.
-
(4.5A) Physical Properties of Matter
The student is expected to measure, compare, and contrast physical properties of matter, including size, mass, volume, states (solid, liquid, gas) temperature, magnetism, and the ability to sink or float.
-
(4.5B) Changes in Matter
The student is expected to predict the changes caused by heating and cooling such as ice becoming liquid water and condensation forming on the outside of a glass of ice water.
-
(4.5C) Mixtures and Solutions
The student is expected to compare and contrast a variety of mixtures and solutions such as rocks in sand, sand in water, or sugar in water.
