(2.5) Matter and Energy
Overview
Is it hotter or cooler? Heavier or lighter? Why does chocolate melt? Students learn to observe and compare physical properties, such as shape, relative mass, relative temperature and texture. They might even combine materials to construct a tower or a bridge.
-
(2.5A) Physical Properties of Matter
Classify matter by physical properties, including shape, relative mass, relative temperature, texture, flexibility, and whether material is a solid or liquid.
-
(2.5B) Changes
Students will compare changes in materials caused by heating and cooling.
-
(2.5C) Changes in Physical Properties
Demonstrate that things can be done to materials to change their physical properties such as cutting, folding, sanding, and melting.
-
(2.5D) Interaction of Parts in a System
Students will combine materials that when put together can do things that they cannot do by themselves such as building a tower or a bridge and justify the selection of those materials based on their physical properties.
