(2.5A) Physical Properties of Matter
Overview
Classify matter by physical properties, including shape, relative mass, relative temperature, texture, flexibility, and whether material is a solid or liquid.
Several important concepts are embedded within this TEKS objective. Each concept is presented on its own page (see links below).
-
Shape
Students learn about geometric shapes and how to classify objects based on that property.
-
Mass Comparisons
Students explore relative mass by comparing two objects using a visual inspection, by holding the objects, and by using a balance.
-
Temperature Comparisons
Students learn about relative temperature by comparing the temperature of different areas.
-
Texture
Students develop a broader texture vocabulary to more accurately describe and classify matter based on their textures.
-
Flexibility
Students compare sporting balls based on their weight, strength, hardness, and flexibility and learn about these physical properties.
-
Solids and Liquids
Students learn about classifying materials by investigating solids and liquids and learning about properties specific to each.
