(5.5) Properties of Matter
Overview
At this point in elementary school, students engage in more sophisticated investigations of different materials. They become familiar with concepts related to mass, magnetism, physical state (solid, liquid, and gas), relative density (sinking and floating), solubility in water, and the ability to conduct or insulate thermal energy or electric energy. They use a variety of tools, such as thermometers, calculators, metric rulers and stop watches, to collect data.
-
(5.5A) Physical Properties of Matter
Classify matter based on physical properties, including: mass, magnetism, physical state (solid, liquid and gas), relative density (sinking and floating), solubility in water, and ability to conduct or insulate thermal or electric energy.
-
(5.5B) Boiling, Freezing, Melting Points
Students will identify the boiling and freezing/melting points of water on the Celsius scale.
-
(5.5C) Mixtures
Students will demonstrate that some mixtures maintain physical properties of their ingredients such as iron filings and sand.
-
(5.5D) Solutions
Students will identify changes that can occur in the physical properties of the ingredients of solutions such as dissolving salt in water or adding lemon juice to water.
