Overview
Fifth grade students explore how organisms interact with one another and with their environment. They also build a deeper understanding of inherited traits and learned behaviors, and how structures and functions can help organisms to survive.

(5.9) Ecosystems
Students learn about energy flow through an ecosystem, the effects of changes in an ecosystem, and the importance of carbon dioxide to the survival of plants and animals.

(5.10) Adaptations and Life Cycles
Students look at how adaptations help organisms survive and differentiate between inherited traits and learned behaviors. They also understand complete and incomplete metamorphosis of insects.
