Non-standard Measurement
TEKS Objective
The student is expected to collect data from observations using simple equipment such as hand lenses, primary balances, thermometers, and non-standard measurement tools.
Essential Understanding
The student develops abilities necessary to do scientific inquiry in classroom and outdoor investigations.
Science Background
Classroom Case Studies Grade K-2: Annenberg Learner (website) - Class case studies enable examination of how children in grades K-2 think about and work with measurement concepts, including those of area and relative size. Also includes strategies for presenting related content in your own classes.

Assessment Ideas
Have students read How Big is a Foot? by Rolf Myller, or read it aloud to the class (see Literature Connections, below). Challenge each student to “build” a bed from construction or copy paper, using his or her foot length as the primary unit of measurement.
