Overview
The student is expected to identify factors in the environment, including temperature and precipitation that affect growth and behavior such as migration, hibernation, and dormancy of living things.

Animal Migration
Animals migration behaviors are affected by changes in their environments. By looking at butterfly migration students learn about these environmental factors and organisms’ response.

Hibernation and Dormancy
Environmental factors such as temperature and precipitation can cause organisms to enter dormancy or cause animals to hibernate. Students explore that as winter’s cold temperatures limit the availability of food, some animals enter Hibernation.

Seasons
Many environmental changes are related to the seasons. Thus many organisms’ growth and behavior cycles match seasonal changes. In this signature lesson students identify environmental and climatological factors that influence animals’ seasonal habits, and classify animals as adapters, hibernators, or migratory.
