(1.5B) Changes
Overview
The student will predict and identify changes in materials caused by heating and cooling such as ice melting, water freezing, and water evaporating.
Several important concepts are embedded within this TEKS objective. Each concept is presented on its own page (see links below).
-
Changes Caused by Heating
Students learn about changes in materials caused by heating such as ice melting and water evaporating.
-
Changes Caused by Cooling
Students learn about changes in materials caused by cooling such as water freezing by observing, describing, and measuring the change.
-
States of Matter
Observable changes in materials caused by heating or cooling correspond to changes in the state of matter. When heated, solid ice changes into liquid water which when heated more turns into gaseous steam. Inversely, when steam is cooled it condenses into liquid water, which if cooled further freezes into ice. Students learn about the basic states of matter they experience in their everyday lives.
