Using Goggles and Gloves

Using Goggles and Gloves

TEKS Objective

The student is expected to use safety equipment, including safety goggles and gloves.

Essential Understanding

The student knows how to use a variety of tools and methods to conduct science inquiry.

Science Background

Safety Glasses and Goggles: All About Vision (website) - Safety goggles are important tools when conducting elementary science.  Learn more about the standards that are required for these goggles.

Signature Lesson

Investigating Safety, Grade 5: Ohio Department of Education (PDF) - Students observe a demonstration about safety equipment, use different science equipment, including safety goggles and gloves, and create guidelines to reinforce safe practices in the science laboratory.

Students also create a safety rubric for use throughout the school year.

Elaboration Lessons and Extensions

Safety in the Lab Mini Posters: Federal Way (WA) Public Schools (PDF) - Student groups are assigned different safety rules, and then work collaboratively to produce a safety posters that summarize the intent and importance of those rules.

Assessment Ideas

Challenge students to write in their science notebooks different scenarios for which safety goggles would be needed in the science classroom. Answers might include using chemicals, working with sand and other small particles, dealing with projectiles like rockets, etc.
