(5.10B) Inherited Traits and Learned Behaviors
Readiness
Overview
The student is expected to differentiate between inherited traits of plants and animals such as spines on a cactus or shape of a beak and learned behaviors such as an animal learning tricks or a child riding a bicycle.
-
Inherited Traits
Some characteristics of organisms are inherited from their parents. Bird beak shape, for example, is a trait passed from parent to offspring and is an important part for a bird’s survival within their environment. Instinctual behaviors are also inherited from parents.
-
Learned Behaviors
Some characteristics of organisms are NOT inherited from their parents. Many of these learned behaviors are taught by an organism’s parents or caregivers. Students investigate and understand the difference between instinctual and learned behaviors and how they help an organism to survive.
